what’s in my hospital bag
i know, i know, another post about what to pack in your hospital bag. i’ve read about one hundred of them. so why is this one any different? well i’ve gotten together with some fellow postpartum nurses and compiled a list of what we think are some of the most essential items for you to bring to the hospital with you!
as a nurse, i inadvertently stumble upon new mother’s hospital bags and often cannot believe what I see. you’d think they were going on a week long vacation! they’ll likely tell you after the fact they brought way too much, didn’t utilize the majority of their bag(s), but wish they knew what the heck to bring! actually, that was totally me with my first! now, i will do my best to impart a few things i have seen/used that worked well for my patients and myself.
here are some of the items that i have packed in my bag this time:
a robe. this one in particular is so unbelievably comfortable! you’ll want this when you have visitors after baby, when the nurses come to check your fundus/bleeding every few hours and easy access for nursing.
UPDATE: long sleeved pajamas. shorts pajamas / lounge pants anything will do, just make sure there is easy access/stretchiness for skin to skin and/or nursing baby!
UPDATE: you’ll want something on your feet at ALL times when walking around the hospital. make sure to get slippers with the grips on the bottom, otherwise you’ll be caught and forced into those sexy hospital socks! i buy super cheap slippers and throw them out when i’m discharged from the hospital.
the gownie. UPDATE: third time around I chose to use this one! and fourth time, this one! Cant go wrong with any of them.
I had read so many reviews from other moms saying not to purchase anything like this because it gets dirty in delivery and ruined, thus a waste of money. i have to disagree with the crowd on this one. i had a gownie with all of my deliveries. i really prefer not wearing the hospital gowns because i’ve seen what happens in those gowns, and i’ve also seen the laundering process, insert cringe face. the gownie is super comfortable, you can walk around in it without revealing your bum, and great for after delivery for skin to skin and breastfeeding. UPDATE: for reference i wear the S/M and fits with extra room for belly, no problem!
the belly bandit. i cannot praise this enough! this is great for both vaginal and c section deliveries. i like to think that it pulls all of my “insides” back into place again. it’s like magic! UPDATE: still using it at 5 months postpartum. i have had questions on sizing- i purchased a size small and wish (now) that i had gotten an XS as i find now that i can’t get it tight enough.
extra long cell phone cord for you and your partner. your bed will likely not be within reach of an outlet, so having a longer cord will allow easy access to a fully charged phone. UPDATE: a portable charger has been a lifesaver, take in anywhere and you’ll be able to charge your phone from the comfort of your own diaper bag!
toiletries and a towel(s), toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, my fav shampoo/conditioner (LU30 for 30% off!) , blowdryer, my most asked about straightener. trust me on this one, you’ll want your own and not the hospitals’ version of these. you’ll feel half human again after you freshen up after delivery with your own toiletries.
tucks pads and dermoplast. i am not sure if every hospital gives these out, even though they should! you’ll want these for when you get home as well, so go ahead and buy them.
you’ll want to bring chapstick, the hospital tends to be a dry place and your lips will suffer if you don’t have some.
any flip flops for the shower. UPDATE: these, cheap and durable- enough said! remember my previous statement about wanting something on your feet at all times? or, these flip flops because you can’t go wrong with Old Navy flip flops!
UPDATE: swaddles for baby. of course the hospital has a ton, but I like using my own and plus these are just so soft and comfortable! just remember to keep your swaddles from getting mixed in the hospitals’ laundry, that would be a sad day!
a boppy pillow for nursing or bottle-feeding, especially for first time mamas. i have also heard great reviews on this pillow but haven’t personally tried it out! UPDATE: i finally tried the my brest friend nursing pillow and, hands down, love it!
UPDATE: after trying even more bras, i’ve found THE BEST bra. the Ollie Gray nursing bra is so comfortable and the best part is that its a pumping bra (great for working moms!), the perfect workout bra (i legit have had women of all ages come to me at the gym and ask where i got my bra from!) and easy peasy for nursing! i’d hands down reccomend this one for anyone, even not nursing! and no worries, its the perfect transition for after nursing as a great sports bra! another amazing bra that I wear (non nursing) here- perfect wireless and the reviews will speak for it, HERE!
a going home outfit. something comfy! i swear by THESE tanks! also, do yourself a favor and grab a pair of THESE (over 35K positive reviews, that should tell you something!) comfortable high waisted leggings. and an oversized top for comfort- these are perfect for leggings and a fan favorite!
going home outfit for baby. because we don’t know the gender of this baby, i plan on just sticking baby in one of these for the ride home.UPDATE: THIS and THIS adorable baby girl take home outfit! and for those little boys HERE and HERE!
a cooler. yes, i pack a cooler for the six pack that i’m going to drink once i get this baby out of me! JUST KIDDING. actually, its for my placenta. i have my placenta encapsulated. i did this with my daughter after researching it and seeing the possible benefits. although i have nothing to compare it to, i will be doing it again with this baby. my milk supply was off the charts, my energy was amazing, and i had zero postpartum depression. i don’t know that any of this was actually related to digesting my placenta but i felt great so i’ve chosen to do it again! UPDATE: if you live in the hampton roads area and want my reference, message me on instagram!
most hospitals are going to have everything you need, such as the infamous (and most comfortable) mesh underwear, different sized pads, pacifiers, breast pumps, hats for baby, diapers and wipes (make sure you stock up on these before leaving), nipple cream, formula; if you are bottle feeding, etc. i suggest calling ahead and asking any questions regarding supplies that you may have, that way you are prepared!
PS: although it doesn’t fit in that bag of yours, don’t forget to bring a car seat. comical huh? you’re probably like, “yeah, its been set up in the car for weeks now!” 😉 if you’re still torn on what to get, check out my recent blog where i review the uppababy carseat and two of their strollers that we personally have!
hopefully you have found something that can help you on your big day! there are no wrong choices and nothing can take away from the miracle of life that you are about to experience. i wish you nothing but health and happiness in your journey, good luck to you and your growing family!
don’t forget to join me on instagram!
xoxo,

Hey! Did you ecapsulate your placenta yourself or have it done professionally?
minding mulloy

i have it done professionally.

Hi Minding Mulloy,
I’m a first time mom, I’m 6 months along and I was reading what’s in your hospital bag I have a question what do you use the tucks pads and dermoplast for? Sorry if it’s a dumb question I just don’t know what to expect after birth and you’ve actually helped me to start asking questions. Thank you so much for your blog ?..
Mrs Jean
Trucks pads help with swelling and hemrroids, you leave them sit on your pad and dermaplast is a numbing spray for your lady bits.
Nicole
You will bleed for weeks after you have the baby, and the spray will help the burning after you have the baby, you can’t wipe with toilet paper only use a spray water bottle, and then spray it on there. Stock up on pads for the first 4 weeks after you have the baby.
Nicole
Thanks for this post! I’ve read a bunch of these but I like yours, it’s comprehensive and to the point. Some of these lists seem to push certain brands/products but I like that you’ve done this before and like what you like. I’ve been on the fence about the gownie but now I’m def getting one. Do you bring gifts for the nurses? A few posts I’ve read mentioned that and I’m due with baby #1 in about a month and I never thought about gifts and figured as a nurse you’d be best equipped to answer. Thanks!
minding mulloy
hi nicole!
thank you so much! i’m glad this helped you! i can’t speak for every nurse but we never expect gifts. snacks/food is what we typically receive from patients. regardless, its the thought that counts but being an easy patient is the best gift, hehe 😉
Nicole
Thanks so much, Lauren! I will definitely be a good patient, nurses run everything and I know will be a huge help so I would not want to do anything but be their fave 🙂 which is also why I plan on providing some sort of thank you. Hope you and baby are feeling well!
Kalyn
Hi Lauren,
Placenta encapsulation is something I am interested in, do you have a recommendation for a company to use?
minding mulloy
hi there!
i don’t as i’m not sure where you live. i would recommend researching companies near where you live and reading reviews on them!
Jamie
I love this blog, thanks for the great tips!! I have one question off topic here but do you have any suggestions for decorating a gender neutral nursery?
minding mulloy
thank you! a lot of black and white! i will be doing a blog post about his nursery in the coming weeks. i’ll throw in some tips on this- stay tuned 😉
Rachel
Hi Lauren!
I saw your pic on Instagram of you holding your belly before delivery and holding Tate afterwards. So cute! I’m wanting to create a similar before and after for my first baby due in May. I am really curious about how your gownie stayed so clean through the whole process? I’m worried the gown will get dirty during birth. And what was the timeline between the two pictures? I imagine I’ll want to shower and change as soon as possible.
minding mulloy
Hi Rachel!
thanks for stopping by! congratulations on your pregnancy! i couldn’t tell you how it stayed so clean! it wasn’t a very long or dirty process for me. the first photo was taken when i was admitted around 9AM and the second photo was taken about 2 hours after birth (7PM). I couldn’t shower or change until the next morning as my legs were still numb from the epidural. i hope this helps!
Rachel
It does help! Thank you for the info. Congratulations again on your beautiful babies!
Isabel
Hi there! I just found this and it is luckily the first thing i have read about packing my bag! Did you wear the gownie during labor/delivery or just after? Thank you for this blog post!!
minding mulloy
Hi! Yes, i wore it during delivery and then after until i was able to take a shower! congratulations and good luck! xo

Hi Lauren!
I live in Hampton Roads, and I’d love more info on placenta capsules. I know a few other mommies who have done it and highly recommend it too! This is my first pregnancy and there is so much to learn, but I’m definitely interested in any advice you have for doing it in this area.
minding mulloy
Hi Jamie! can you email me and i will shoot you the info on the lady that i used! thanks! xox hello@mindingmulloy.com
Jenn
I’ll be having a c section for sure in late December. I’m wondering if you think they would let me wear a Gownie in the OR and after. Maybe each hospital is different? Thoughts appreciated?
minding mulloy
they likely wont let you wear your gownie in the OR, but definitely afterwards! good luck! xo!

Great list! I have actually been reading lately that encapsulating your placenta can be a problem for some women who breastfeed. It has to do with the hormones that are in your placenta while baby is growing so you don’t leak all over the place while baby isn’t out of the womb (same reason you can’t take the pill while breastfeeding). For my first I bought an XXL $5 nightgown from Walmart, and I loved it! I was so glad I brought my own gown, was way comfier than the hospital one. I brought so much stuff that we didn’t use. I plan to pack almost nothing when I have my second, if I really missed something for after I can have someone get it for me.
Stephanie
Hey, I noticed you said you wished you would have gotten an xs belly bandit….im wondering what size to get. Pre-pregnancy. I am a size 2-4 dress. Sm shirt and size 5 jeans….
minding mulloy
those are my stats as well! the small just didn’t go tight enough a few weeks after baby. thats the only reason i wish had gone with a smaller size!
Kate
I really loved this article. I’m on my 3rd Pregnancy and this was still really helpful
😊
Steph
Found this SUPER helpful, thanks for the great tips!
Kash
I love this thanks for all of your info. I really appreciate the straightforwardness as well.
Hayley
I came across this post on Pinterest and I have to say this has been one of the most helpful “what to pack” posts I’ve read! I’m due to give birth to my first bubba in June and have already started researching like a mad lady! I’m beyond happy to have discovered your blog!

This post is so helpful! I am a first time mom and my little guy is 2 now. This would have been such a wonderful list to have had when I was packing!
Jenny
Hey Minding,
I am in the Hampton Rds area and wondered what company you use to do your placenta encapsulation. Will you email it to me?
Thank you in advance
minding mulloy
Hi!
Please message me on Instagram and I will pass along the information! Thank you!
Anna D.
Hi!
Just want to say thanks for sharing your list! I’m due with our first baby in about 6 weeks, and this list is super helpful! Hope all is going well with you and your family.
minding mulloy
Hi Anna!
Thanks for the sweet message. Good Luck to you welcoming your sweet new babe into the world! Glad I could help a bit <3
Somer
Thank you so much for showing all of this!! I’m a first time mom and I have no idea what to bring! Such good advice on what to pack! lol I feel some relief now! I also want to thank you for adding that picture of your son, I’m 20 weeks with a daughter who will be born with no left hand and I’m happy to see that nothing is different! You have a beautiful family and I hope I’m as strong as you when she’s born! Thanks a bunch!!!

I was wondering if you ever thought of changing the structure of your blog? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having 1 or 2 images. Maybe you could space it out better?
minding mulloy
I agree and have updated it to space it out better, let me know what you think!
